Performance Evaluation of Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

چکیده
This paper investigates the performance of redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) with a level of 5 by using a Markov model. Considering RAID systems cannot be adequately modeled using a single queuing model, we use four modes to model the RAID-5 system. The analytical model is verified by simulation through a Q+ simulation software package. The results obtained from the Markov model are very close to the Q+ simulation results. Additionally, several simulation scenarios are provided to demonstrate the relationship of the number of disks and the response times.

A Performance Evaluation of RAID Architectures
In today's computer systems, the disk I/O subsystem is often identiied as the major bottleneck to system performance. One proposed solution is the so-called redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID). In this paper, we examine the performance of two of the most promising RAID architectures, the mirrored array and the rotated parity array. First, we propose several scheduling policies for the m...
متن کاملThe Case for Redundant Arrays of Internet Links (RAIL)
It is well-known that wide-area networks face today several performance and reliability problems. In this work, we propose to solve these problems by connecting two or more local-area networks together via a Redundant Array of Internet Links (or RAIL) and by proactively replicating each packet over these links. In that sense, RAIL is for networks what RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks)...

ÐThe performance of today's database systems is usually limited by the speed of their I/O devices. Fast I/O systems can be built from an array of low cost disks working in parallel. This kind of disk architecture is called RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks). RAID promises improvement over SLED (Single Large Expensive Disks) in performance, reliability, power consumption, and scalabili...
متن کاملThe Performance of Parity Placements in Disk Arrays
Due to recent advances in CPU and memory system performance, I/O systems are increasingly limiting the performance of modern computer systems. Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) have been proposed by Patterson et al. [1] to meet the impending I/O crisis. RAIDs substitute many small inexpensive disks for a few large expensive disks to provide higher performance (both transfer rate and ...

Clusters of workstations become more and more popular to power data server applications such as large scale Web sites or e-Commerce applications. There has been much research on scaling the front tiers (web servers and application servers) using clusters, but databases usually remain on large dedicated SMP machines. In this paper, we address database performance scalability and high availabilit...
